#U_Lakes The U_Lakes project to improve blue infrastructure has been started
On 22 July 2025, a kick-off press conference was held in Ivano-Frankivsk for the UrbanLakes - Cross-Border Synergy for Blue Ecosystem Preservation (U_Lakes) project, which is being implemented as part of the Interreg NEXT Romania–Ukraine 2021–2027 programme.
Deputy Mayor Sviatoslav Nykorovych delivered a welcoming speech. Ruslana Vasylyuk, Director of the Municipal Enterprise “Centre for City Development and Recreation,” spoke about the practical value of the project for residents and the new functions that the area near German Lake will receive. Programme Officer Alina Ilisai joined the online meeting and congratulated everyone on the successful start of the project. Head of the Project Implementation Office Lidiia Cherevko presented the U_Lakes project itself, outlining its goals, stages, international partnership and expected results.
The aim of the project is to implement a joint Action Plan for the development of two recreational areas on lakes in Botosani and Ivano-Frankivsk, based on the European Union's best practices in blue and green infrastructure management, nature conservation and the application of the principles of international cooperation and good neighbourliness.
The project provides for:
The development of a recreation area near German Lake in Ivano-Frankivsk, including:
- the installation of a playground made from environmentally friendly materials;
- a picnic and recreation area with benches, shelters, and bicycle parking;
- an outdoor sports complex with inclusive elements;
- a bird watching tower, and renovation of the piers.
Protection of biodiversity:
- installation of houses for hedgehogs and insects, bird feeders;
- preservation of wildlife by developing the natural part of the territory.
Greening and technical equipment:
- planting new green spaces;
- purchase of a wood chipper for effective maintenance of the territory.
The total budget for the project is €419,507. The budget for Ivano-Frankivsk is €217,069, of which 85% is funded by the European Union under the Interreg Next Romania-Ukraine 2021-2027 programme. The project will last 18 months.
The main partner of the project is the Municipality of Botosani (Romania), and the project partner is the Executive Committee of the Ivano-Frankivsk City Council.
The U_Lakes project will contribute to the preservation of biodiversity, the development of an environmentally-oriented recreational space, and the raising of environmental awareness among residents. It will also strengthen cross-border cooperation with Romania and promote the development of ecotourism in Ivano-Frankivsk.
