#U_Lakes Urban water bodies – our cities’ natural air conditioners

As part of the information and awareness-raising campaign under the UrbanLakes - Cross-border synergy for blue ecosystem preservation (U_Lakes) project– we are explaining why urban water bodies act as natural air conditioners.
In summer, they cool the air, creating a comfortable microclimate for residents and helping cities cope with the heat. Rivers, lakes, ponds and canals not only enhance the urban landscape but also play a vital role in naturally regulating temperature.
For example, in Ivano-Frankivsk, the City Lake, together with the surrounding park, helps to lower the temperature by several degrees on hot days, making the city centre a more pleasant place for walks, sport and relaxation. Similar systems in Copenhagen, where lakes and canals are situated in densely populated areas, reduce the ‘heat island’ effect and create a healthier environment for people and animals.
These natural mechanisms enable cities to cope with the heat without incurring additional energy costs for air conditioning, reduce the strain on the electricity grid and help improve residents’ quality of life. Caring for urban water bodies is not just a matter of aesthetics, but also a strategic investment in the comfort, health and sustainability of cities.
