#U_Lakes A City in Harmony with Nature

As part of the information and awareness-raising campaign envisaged by the UrbanLakes - Cross-border synergy for blue ecosystem preservation (U_Lakes) project, funded by the European Union through the Interreg Next VI-A Romania-Ukraine 2021–2027 programme, we share information about how the combination of green and blue spaces is shaping the future of cities.

When water bodies are combined with parks, squares, and other green spaces, the so-called green-blue infrastructure emerges. This is a modern approach to urban development that not only makes cities more attractive, but also helps them adapt to the challenges of the 21st century. Such infrastructure creates a natural shield against the effects of climate change: water bodies cool the air, green spaces filter dust and carbon dioxide, and together they reduce the risks of flooding and overheating in urban areas.

Green-blue spaces are not only about aesthetics, but also functionality. They contribute to biodiversity conservation, create places for recreation and leisure, and improve the quality of life for residents. European cities are already actively applying this approach: for example, in Vienna, Berlin, and Copenhagen, the combination of parks and water bodies has become an important part of urban climate adaptation strategies. In Ukraine, this approach is also becoming increasingly relevant, as our cities are gradually recognising the value of water bodies and green spaces as a shared resource.

Preserving blue ecosystems is not only about caring for nature. It is an investment in our shared future, in the health, well-being, and environmental resilience of communities. They help cities remain vibrant, beautiful, and ready to face modern challenges, ensuring a balance between development and harmony with the environment.
