#U_Lakes Spring is on its way - and nature can feel it

As part of the information and awareness campaign for the project “UrbanLakes - Cross-Border Synergy for Blue Ecosystem Preservation, we draw attention to important natural processes that occur around us every year but often go unnoticed.
One of the first signs of spring is the return of storks. Ornithologists are already tracking their movements using GPS trackers: the birds travel over 10,000 kilometers to return to their nesting sites.
The mass migration of storks to Ukraine usually begins in late March and lasts until early April. The birds return to familiar nests that they have used for many years, which makes them particularly sensitive to changes in the environment.
Storks are an indicator species, as their numbers and nesting success directly depend on the state of blue ecosystems - lakes, rivers, and wetlands. This is where they find food and a safe environment to live in. Water pollution, land drainage, and the loss of natural shorelines negatively affect both birds and the ecological balance in general.
