#U_Lakes How Copenhagen combine water, nature, and city comfort

As part of the project “UrbanLakes: Cross-Border Synergy for Blue Ecosystem Preservation”, implemented under the Interreg NEXT Romania–Ukraine Programme, we share good practices from cities around the world and in Ukraine, and demonstrate how this experience can improve public spaces in Ivano-Frankivsk. That’s why we can’t overlook the example of Copenhagen (Denmark), where water has become an integral part of urban life.

In Copenhagen, water spaces serve not only an aesthetic function but also actively help the city manage stormwater, reduce the burden on the drainage system, and cool urban neighborhoods during hot summers. At the same time, canals and lakes are integrated into walking routes, sports areas, and cultural leisure spaces, creating a comfortable environment for community life and activities. The shores of these bodies of water are landscaped, and green corridors support local flora and fauna, ensuring biodiversity in an urban setting. Open waterfronts and lakeside parks become hubs of social activity where residents can relax, play sports, or spend time with their families in nature.

As part of the UrbanLakes project, this experience is being taken into account in the development of German Lake in Ivano-Frankivsk. Plans call for the creation of areas for active and passive recreation, green corridors, and comfortable walking paths, so that the water and nature can benefit the community — cooling the air, supporting biodiversity, and creating a pleasant space for walks, sports, and cultural activities.
