#U_Lakes Preserving water for the future of cities

2026.02.06

As part of the information and awareness campaign provided for by the project “UrbanLakes – Cross-border Synergy for Blue Ecosystem Preservation”, funded by the European Union through the Interreg Next VI-A Romania-Ukraine 2021–2027 programme, we are talking about the importance of water bodies in cities and their role in our lives.

Blue ecosystems not only beautify the urban landscape, but also perform vital functions. They cool the air in summer, create comfortable conditions for recreation, naturally purify water from pollution and support biodiversity. Rivers, ponds and lakes become home to fish, birds, insects and aquatic plants, promoting ecological balance and protecting cities from flooding during heavy rains.

Every city has its own unique water bodies, and preserving them is just as important as caring for parks and squares. They create places for walking, sports activities and recreation, bring the community together and promote a healthy lifestyle. By caring for blue ecosystems, we invest in the comfort, safety and sustainable development of cities where nature and people exist in harmony.

For example, in Ivano-Frankivsk, city ponds and lakes not only decorate parks, but also help to keep lower the temperature in summer, creating a pleasant microclimate for all residents.
