#U_Lakes The Lake’s Green Defenders. Why Water Plants Are Important

2026.08.18

As part of the project “UrbanLakes: Cross-Border Synergy for Blue Ecosystem Preservation”, implemented under the Interreg NEXT Romania–Ukraine Programme, we share information about the specifics of caring for cities’ water bodies.

When the water level drops and plants become more visible, a water body may appear neglected. However, its appearance does not always reflect the actual state of its ecosystem.

Water and riparian plants perform important natural functions: they help maintain favorable conditions in the body of water, participate in natural water purification processes, and provide a habitat for various species of living organisms.

That is why the modern approach to water body management does not involve the complete removal of plants, but rather the balanced management of the natural environment. It is important to keep the area clean, remove trash, and, when necessary, control excessive plant growth, all while avoiding disruption of natural processes.

German Lake is an important part of Ivano-Frankivsk’s blue-green infrastructure. Its value lies not only in the opportunities it offers for recreation but also in its ability to support biodiversity, influence the microclimate, and serve as part of the city’s natural ecosystem.

Therefore, caring for the lake means striking a balance between creating a comfortable space for people and preserving nature. After all, sometimes the best solution for nature is not to remove everything, but to understand what should remain and why.
